The Wands made it six games unbeaten following a goalless draw at Faversham Town on Tuesday night. What were Tony Russell’s observations of the game.
We kept our unbeaten run going to six games. Were you pleased with the performance in what was a very hard game?
I wouldn’t say I was pleased with it, it was a night of learning and making sure we are better next time. Fair play to Faversham & Ray Turner. I didn’t see the formation coming and we didn’t deal with it very well. It took us 25-30mins to get to grips with it. We didn’t get on the ball enough and I thought Faversham had the better of it if I’m honest in the 1st half.
2nd half once we spoke about how they set up and brought Ben Mundele on it was a different story, We had a lot more of the ball and that allowed us to move them about more and control it a lot better. I’m pleased we looked strong again in defence and young Marcus at centre half will learn a lot from playing against Mark Lovell, he is very good at what he does and he schooled him a little bit in that first half but Marcus learns very fast and he won that battle in the end so that game will stand the young fella in good stead going forward. Just like it will playing against that formation as we have never played a team with that set up so we now all know how to deal with that for the next time we come up against it.
We had 3 really good chances in the game. Dawson’s header and the one off the line from the corner at the end but the Shaggy one really should have gone in. Rhuley has gone past the full back and then the centre half & pulled it back it to Shag on the penalty spot and he has put it just wide. You would put your house on him scoring from there
The Wands fans behind the goal were convinced Aaron Rhule was pushed over in the box for a penalty second half. Did you get a good view of that? Also some of us were none the wiser why Faversham had a goal disallowed before half time, did we ride our luck a bit there.
For the two calls from the ref. Bluey was getting fouled from the corner that’s why the ref rightly gave a foul. It was a pretty clear foul. As for the foul on Arron Rhule it looked a pen to me! He has pushed it past him and the defender has pushed him over but I’m sure Ray could point to a couple the ref didn’t give for them. I will say we have had better refs this season and leave it there!
The general feeling amongst the fans was a slightly frustrating evening but was a draw was a fair result.
I’m not sure both teams did enough to win the game so a draw was about right I think, I like Ray so only wish them well for the rest of the season and I’m sure they will pick up and get back up the right end of the table.
We move on to Saturday now and I would say that Corinthian Casuals are our hardest test to date. They are a really good side so it will be nice to see how we deal with it.
