Cray Wanderers 2 Aveley 0
Scorers: Danny Haynes 40, Max Williams 59
The Wands began their pre-season programme with a solid victory against Aveley at North Kent College.
Tony Russell used a number of first team players and trialists for this first match and a goal in each half was enough to beat a decent looking Aveley side.
With the likes of Lea Dawson, Grant Basey, James Duckworth and Ben Hunt unavailable this afternoon, the Wands took the game to Aveley early on before the game slowed down in the heat. Player-Assistant Manager, Paul Lorraine partnered Jay Leader in defence during the first half.
Chances were few and far between with Aveley having a couple of shots go over the top. It was Cray though that went in front five minutes before half time when good movement down the left saw Karl Dent square the ball across to Danny Haynes who tapped in from close range.
The second half saw a few changes of personnel on each side but Cray after the break had some good young players looking to impress and they certainly did that as the Wands dominated.
The Aveley keeper had to make a very smart stop to turn a curling shot onto the post. Then on the hour, the Wands scored again this time when trialist, Max Williams fizzed in a shot from 20 yards which crept into the bottom left corner of the net.
Aveley kept going but Cray had a good element of control of the game and saw out the game with the likes of Nick Blue, Jay Leader, Jamie Mascoll and Sean Roberts each having a full game and put in good displays. With plenty more pre-season games to come there will be more opportunities for some of the trialists to show what they can do and on the evidence particularly in the second half, this could be a team to reckon with in the Ryman South which kicks off in 4 weeks time.
The Wands will next be in action on Tuesday evening when we travel to face Bearsted. Please note the kick off time is 7.30pm.
