Cray Wanderers 3
Billericay Town 10
The harsh realities of life in the Ryman Development League North were brought home as last seasons Champions Billericay Town scored seven second half goals to beat a game and hardworking Wands side. Despite the end result, Cray led early on and tied the game at 2-2 before the visitors broke away in the second half.
The Wands playing their first home game at Oakley Road got off to a great start with a goal after four minutes. Joel Massamba was played through on a one-on-one but his shot was blocked by the keeper on the edge of the area. The ball fell to Charlie Foster who from twenty five yards blasted the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
A goal for Billericay seemed inevitable and it came though from a very harsh penalty award against Charlie Horbacki in the 26th minute. Papa Badu struck home the kick, his first goal of the night.
Four minutes later, Billericay went ahead when a fine through ball found Badu down the right and he curled a fine shot round Sean Law and low into the net.
In the 32nd minute Cray levelled with another tremendous strike this time from Massamba who from twenty yards out fired an unstoppable shot which swerved past the keeper.
The visitors went ahead six minutes before half time when a fine cross from the left was despatched by Goldy Copela from close range.
Half Time: 2-3
Cray started the second half well and almost levelled when Foster fired a shot narrowly wide from a fine cross from the left.
Ten minutes after half time, Billericay were awarded a second penalty and Badu completed his hat-trick from the spot. After 62 minutes the game was basically over as Jaszine Johnson made a run down the left and powered home a fine strike.
Three minutes later a swift counterattack saw Copela score his second with a deft chip over Law who got his hand to the ball but couldn’t stop it going in. For Cray, Connor Phelps headed over from a corner, but Billericay were in a deadly mood and Johnson scored his second on 70 minutes to make it 7-2.
Three more goals followed in the closing eight minutes for Billericay. First Kieran Asamadu scored then with four minutes to go, Louis Mochman made it nine. The tenth goal came in the 88th minute from Joe Critchell.
Cray though kept going right to the last and pulled a goal back in the dying seconds with a tremendous lobbed shot from long range by Nick Mesa.
This was a very tough outing for the young Wands but they kept going and must now regroup ahead of the next match, on Monday 12th September at home to AFC Hornchurch.
