Cray Wanderers U23s v Margate U23s – Bostik Development League South – 17/12/18
Cray Wanderers U23s 3 Parker 6, 54, Lewis 68
Margate U23s 1 Lewis 34
Cray Wanderers U23s bounced back from last Monday’s home defeat to Carshalton Athletic in great style with a 3-1 win against Margate at Hayes Lane.
In a thankfully more mild evening compared to the last couple of Monday night games Cray got off to the perfect start here with a classy Freddie Parker strike after six minutes. The Wands almost made it 2-0 but for a couple of good saves from the Margate keeper but it was the visitors who struck next on 34 minutes through Ryan Lewis. Cray though played very well in the second half and Parker scored his second on 54 minutes when he curled a free kick into the bottom left corner of the net. The scoring was completed on 68 minutes when Lee Lewis curled home a superb strike from 25 yards and Cray moved up to fourth in the table.
The two sides had met as recently as 27th November with Cray winning at Margate 2-1. Parker was amongst the scorers then and opened the scoring here after just six minutes when Kwame Poku’s ball forward wasn’t cut out by the Margate defence and Parker broke through to coolly slot into the net.
Cray were putting together some good passages of play and down the right, Robbie Daye’s cross to the far post was volleyed wide by Frankie Morgan. For Margate, Mitchell Laing fired a free kick over the top.
The Wands were unlucky not to get a second goal when Joe Barber found Morgan down the left who put across a fine ball to the edge of the six yard box to Daye whose shot was well blocked by keeper Joe Twyman.
Another fine run from Parker from just inside his own half took to the edge of the area and slipped a pass through to Deshon Carty down the left of the area and his near post shot was blocked again well by Twyman. Then Poku and Morgan saw efforts down the left go just across goal and wide as Cray pushed for a second goal.
It was Margate though that levelled when a ball over the top from Oliver Harris saw Tiwa Fujimade attempt to clear but Ryan Lewis nipped in and rolled the ball into an empty net on 34 minutes.
The game became more open after that Omotumnise Akanini had a shot saved for Margate and then Parker’s ball into the area was met by a good volley by Daye but his effort was blocked.
For Cray Carty then shot over from 25 yards but Margate almost went in front when Akanini down the right played a ball to the near post to Lewis whose close range shot was pushed round the post well by Fujimade.
Before the break a Barber corner from the right was headed over by Parker and then shortly after Parker just couldn’t divert a Carty right wing cross on target and the ball went behind.
Half Time: 1-1
The second half began in the same vein and David Showemimo saw an effort fly into the arms of Twyman while for Margate a good ball in from the right was hooked wide by Harris.
The Wands though went back in front when from a free kick, 20 yards from goal almost central, Parker curled the ball round the wall into the bottom left corner giving Twyman no chance to save.
Margate had hung in the game well but Cray played some fine football after this and Parker was unlucky not to claim a hat-trick when Barber’s corner was met by the head of Parker and was cleared off the line by Olaywida Amire.
Then a fine pass from Akan Kasab found Morgan inside the area but his attempted lob was claimed by Twyman. This was followed by Kasab shooting wide from Carty’s pass and then Lee Lewis played a fine ball through to Parker but the ball was bobbling inside the area and his attempted shot was blocked and cleared out to Showemimo who shot wide.
On 68 minutes Cray went 3-1 up with a superb goal from Lee Lewis who picked the ball up 25 yards from goal, ran forward and arched an excellent strike into the top left corner of the net.
Again Parker could have completed his hat-trick from Malik Solebo’s pass but his shot was saved by Twyman’s feet.
The game at this stage was practically won with a free kick from Laing which flew into the arms of Fujimade and Lewis was denied by a fine tackle just outside the area by Ben Hullet as Margate sought a goal to cut the deficit.
Before the end, Cray came close twice to adding to the lead, firstly from a Lewis corner down the left the ball was headed wide by Barber,
Then after a delicious back heel from Solebo into the path of Carty down the right of the area his effort was blocked well by Twyman.
In the end Cray had done enough to win and had played extremely well against difficult opponents. Cray have one more game to play in 2018 and go to second placed Hastings United on Friday night before the Christmas/New Year break.
