Cray Wanderers U23s v Carshalton Athletic U23s – Bostik Development League South – 10/12/18
Cray Wanderers U23s 1 Parker 14
Carshalton Athletic U23s 3 Swaby 23, 80, Antwi 90+2
Cray Wanderers went down to only their second defeat of the Bostik Development South season as Carshalton Athletic came back from an early goal down to win the match with two late goals.
In a game played a breakneck pace throughout, Cray started well and took the lead with Freddie Parker’s well taken goal on 14 minutes. Carshalton though had posed a threat early on and levelled on 23 minutes through Courtney Swaiby.
Cray were unlucky not to retake the lead when Parker’s shot hit the underside of the crossbar twelve minutes from time but Carshalton broke away to score again ten minutes from time with a fine strike from Swaiby. In the second minute of added on time, Carshalton added a third with a crisp finish from Sinatra Antwi.
Cray had been on a good run in the Development South and were third at the start of play with Carshalton one place behind. The teams drew 3-3 early in the season and it looked from the off that a similar type of game might take shape as there were chances at both ends early on.
Firstly for Cray after just two minutes, Freddie Parker dispossessed a defender down the left and charged into the area and his near post shot was saved by the feet of the Carshalton keeper. Then from a corner from the right, Joe Barber ball into the area was headed wide by Neil Spencer.
At the other end Tiwa Fujamade had to make a smart stop to deny Sinatra Antwi with his chest from Karim Kamhouri’s pass.
It was Cray though that struck first on 14 minutes after good work down the right by Deshon Carty and his ball across to the near post was excellent and Parker produced a fine finish low into the net.
Carshalton threatened again when an Antwi free kick out on the left was deflected into the area and Fujimade had to scramble the ball away via the left post.
The Robins levelled on 23 minutes with a well worked goal after Anthony Ogbanufe’s cross was cleared out to Courtney Swaby who fired into the bottom right corner from just inside the penalty area.
For Cray Malik Solebo tested the keeper with a low drive from the edge of the area and just before half time, Cray came close again when a Barber corner was headed over by Ben Hullet from 8 yards.
Half Time: 1-1
The second half continued in the same vein and substitute Cain Cruz saw a shot blocked by a defender and from a corner the ball came to Kyrique Garvey-Williams who shot wide.
For Carshalton, Swaby hoisted a shot onto the roof of the net but Cray were still looking dangerous coming forward and broke away after three successive Carshalton corners, with Cain Cruz making a strong run from his own half to the edge of the area and hit a shot which just grazed the crossbar.
Then, Solebo did well to set up Frankie Morgan down the right who curled in a goalbound shot which the keeper did very well to get down to push the ball away. Morgan then came close with a header from an Alfie Young cross but was just off target.
Still Cray came forward and Carty did well to stay on his feet following a challenge from the keeper down the right and laid the ball across to Solebo whose effort was blocked by the Carshalton defence and then saw an effort held by the keeper.
Cray were very unlucky not to retake the lead when Garvey-Williams played a fine ball through to Parker who did well to hold the ball up and from inside the area crashed a shot off the underside of the crossbar and bounced away from the goalline.
Two minutes later Carshalton took the lead with a goal started and finished by Swaby who down the right picked the ball up 25 yards from goal, ran towards goal and hit a deceptive shot which flew into the bottom right corner of the net.
Cray worked hard to get back on terms and Solebo saw another effort parried by the keeper but luck didn’t seem to be with them in front of goal.
In the second minute of stoppage time Carshalton scored a classy third goal when a four man passing move down the left ended with a ball being played to Antwi who from 18 yards placed a shot into the bottom left corner and gave Carshalton the victory.
Cray are next in action on Monday 17th December at home to Margate.
