Bostik Development League South – 19/11/18
Cray Wanderers 2
Daye 17, Hullet 70
Cray Wanderers moved up to second in the Development South table after a goal in each half was enough to win a lively contest in at times rain lashed conditions at Hayes Lane.
A lively start from Cray saw efforts from Adam Flemming go wide and a Deshon Carty strike was saved by Ryan Turner. The visitors had a couple of early opportunities with Jack Perry seeing a shot saved by Tiwa Fujamade and a David Lonthade shot went over.
Cray took the lead on 17 minutes with a well worked goal with Freddie Parker inside the area was played in by Carty. His shot was blocked by a defender and following up Robbie Daye turned and fired into the net from ten yards.
Daye almost scored again soon after but was denied by an excellent save from Turner. Sittingbourne went back up the other end and a free kick from Declan Pearse went through the wall but was saved well by Fujamade. Then there were chances for Carty who shot just past the left post and for Sittingbourne Pearse volleyed well wide.
Cray came close to scoring before the break when Cain Cruz put Daye through on goal but the keeper did well to save with his feet.
Half Time: 1-0
The rain continued in the second half and Parker tested Turner with a shot at the near post but Sittingbourne had a good spell and Fujamade made an excellent double save to deny Usman Abdulmalik and Perry in quick succession. Then Lonthade curled a shot narrowly wide from 18 yards.
Cray stepped it up and Parker made a good run down the right and played the ball across to Cruz who fired over from 10 yards. Then Daye did well to dispossess a defender and from just inside the area shot just over the top.
The Wands dominated at this stage and Flemming pulled a shot just across goal and wide and then Cruz was denied by another brave block from Turner. Other chances came to Malik Solebo and Flemming both going close with shots wide. For Sittingbourne Smallman Molumnan curled a free kick on the edge of the box over.
The decisive second goal came twenty minutes from the end when a free kick out on the left from Parker was floated into the area and was flicked back off a defender to Ben Hullet who steered a header into the net from 8 yards.
Before the end Cray looked to score a third with Parker and Cruz both seeing efforts saved by Turner while right at the end Lonthade shot over from a free kick.
This was a good performance from Cray in such poor conditions and move to 19 points, nine behind leaders Tooting & Mitcham United but have a couple of games in hand. .
