Cray Wanderers return to Hayes Lane on Saturday looking to continue an eight game unbeaten run at the top of the Bostik South-East against Guernsey. Please note the match starts at 2pm.
Cray got February off to a great start with back to back wins this week at home to Herne Bay (6-0) last Saturday and followed up with a hugely impressive 3-1 win at Whyteleafe on Tuesday night to remain 13 points clear at the top of the Bostik South-East table with 12 games to go. On a wet evening, Cray raised the bar extremely high with a first half performance which brought three goals, the first a deft header from Sean Roberts and a predatory double from Joe Taylor put the Wands three nil up at the break. The second half saw the Wands batten down the hatches in a professional manner with only a penalty kick in the dying seconds breaching the defence. There were so many good performances on Tuesday night but as an all round team display it is pretty hard to beat.
For the visit of the Channel Islanders Cray await the fitness of Barney Williams who has missed the last three games but despite a series of injuries during the season there has been sufficient strength in depth to counter the loss of players including recently Aaron Rhule and Michael Power.
Guernsey make only their third ever visit to Hayes Lane in 13th place in the Bostik South-East with 25 points from their 23 games. The visit of the Green Lions is always one eagerly awaited and Guernsey bring great prestige and class to the league. Tony Vance’s side picked up a great point at Hastings United last Saturday in a 1-1 draw but on Wednesday night were beaten 2-5 at home by East Grinstead Town after twice leading through goals from Charlton Gauvain and Liam Mahon.
Guernsey’s away form has been very good with wins at Haywards Heath Town (2-1). Sevenoaks Town (2-0), Three Bridges (5-0) and VCD Athletic (3-2). They drew at Hastings United (1-1), Horsham (1-1) and Ramsgate (2-2) with their only defeats at East Grinstead Town (0-3), Faversham Town (1-2), Greenwich Borough (0-4) and Whyteleafe (1-3). When the two sides met at Footes Lane on 17th November it was a hard fought game with Cray winning 2-1 with goals from Bradley Pritchard and Archie Johnson after William Fazackerly levelled for Guernsey. At home they beat Haywards Heath Town (3-1), Herne Bay (2-1) and Ramsgate (2-1) and drew with Whitstable but other games ended in defeat. Leading league scorer is Matt Loaring with 12 goals.
The last time the two sides met at Hayes Lane was on the last day of the 2017-18 season with Cray winning 4-0 with two goals from Michael Power and one each from Junior Dadson and Kyron Farrell. The overall record is over 5 games played, Cray have won four and drawn one.
Guernsey FC (not to be confused with the Guernsey representative side) were formed in 2011 as a means to assist good players on the island to improve and test themselves against teams from the mainland. They were accepted by the Combined Counties league Division One for the 2011-12 season gaining promotion. They followed this up in 2012-13 with promotion from the Combined Counties Premier Division and a run to the Semi Finals of the FA Vase, losing to eventual winners Spennymoor Town.
In 2013-14 they entered the Isthmian League South and reached the playoffs in their first season losing to Leatherhead in the Semi Final and entered the FA Cup for the first time. Since then they have finished 10th, 13th, 21st and last season finished in 18th place.
Don’t forget on Saturday it is Ladies Day and all ladies accompanied to the game will have free admission and will receive a gift during the afternoon and the opportunity to take part in a prize draw. General admission is £10.00 adults and £5.00 concessions but there is also the Football For A Fiver offer for supporters of Premier League, EFL and National League clubs on presentation of valid season ticket.
There have been superb games at Hayes Lane involving Cray Wanderers already in 2019 and this promises to be a bit special if you haven’t had a chance to watch this exciting Cray Wanderers side this season.
