The start of 2019 and a cracking league game to begin with as Cray Wanderers take on an in form Three Bridges side at Hayes Lane. Here Tony Russell looks ahead to the game and a look back to the festive fixtures and a new arrival to the club.
Happy New Year to you Tony and to all the coaching staff and players. We’ve bounced back well following the Horsham defeat with two wins over the festive season at home to Sittingbourne (2-1) and at Sevenoaks Town (1-0). The feeling amongst the fans were that these were two very decent and strong performances. What did you think of the two games and how they panned out.
I agree, coming off the back of 3 games without a win the Sittingbourne game was a big one as I said in my previous notes. I really enjoyed how we played vs Sittingbourne, we were nice & brave on the ball & we created lots of chances. We scored 2, plus hit the post 4 times & the Sittingbourne keeper had a great game so I was happy. The Sevenoaks game we played well but made hard work of it, they left out all 3 forwards so it was clear what their game plan was going to be! Leader, Mitch & Phipp have all missed from 6 yards out in the first half plus Feds has hit the bar so by not taking one of them chances we gave them encouragement. We never panic and you only have to see how many late goals we get to know we will always keep coming. Even the games we drew at home to Ramsgate & Phoenix we hit the woodwork late in the game in both of them. We are a fit team who make teams have to work hard without the ball so don’t leave the game early as this team will always come strong at the end. If I had one negative it would be that we need to be better in front of goal, We have been working on getting people around Joe more so let’s see how that unfolds.
The club have recently signed Danny Uchechi from Hampton & Richmond Borough on Saturday and supporters saw flashes of what he can do after he came on in the second half at Sevenoaks. How did this move come about and tell us a little about Danny and his qualities?
Truth is we went in for another Hampton player & it wasn’t to be but Gary said about Danny so we had a chat with him & it suits all party’s at the moment. We have agreed he will come in for 4-5 games then we will sit down & look at it then going forward. Danny is a very skilful player who has a good football brain & is very good technically too.
Finally we welcome Three Bridges to Hayes Lane on Sunday, the only side in the Bostik South-East we’ve yet to play this season. They’ve been on a tremendous run following a poor start to the season and recently have beaten Horsham, Guernsey and Whyteleafe amongst others. What type of game can we expect from Martin Dynan’s (a former Cray Wanderers player) side?
Unbeaten in 8 games & won 7 of them I think so they come into the game in great form. They are hardworking, competitive nad have a flyer out wide and a forward who is strong & scores goals. We will need to play well to beat them that’s for sure but saying all that I know if we show up & do what we do then we will win.
