In a roundup of games involving some of our Youth teams, there were good wins for the U18s, U13s and U9’s, whilst the Selkent League U14s, U12 Piranhas and U11s were victorious at the weekend..
The U18s maintained a good end of season form as they defeated Phoenix Sports 5-2 at Goals Eltham. A hat-trick from Kushal Campbell-Palmer and goals from Charlie Foster and Nabil Aman helped Phil Foster’s side to victory. With only one more game to play this season, Cray are third in the Division North table, six points behind leaders Bromley. The title looks to be decided between Bromley and Dulwich Hamlet who are four points behind Bromley but have two games in hand.
The U13s who have a tremendous season in league and cups remain seven points clear at the top of the Division North table after a last minute goal gave them a 4-3 win at Greenwich Borough. Cray goalscorers were Atta Guedu, Tion Cudjoe, Maison Burstow and Max Gayle. Sean Foley’s side still have nine games to go in the season and a League Cup final on the 10th March to look forward to.
Tyrone Sterling’s U14s were beaten in their most recent league game losing 5-1 at home to Crayford Arrows. Cray are seventh in the table with five games still to go.
In the Selkent League, the high scoring U14s were 5-4 winners at league leaders Athenlay FC. Cray are a point behind the leaders in third place.
The U12 sides had slightly differing results. The U12 Sharks were beaten 4-3 at home to Weigall Wanderers whilst the U12 Piranhas were 4-2 winners at home to Dulwich Youth White.
Meanwhile the U9s continued their superb form with victory over Petts Wood. Please see here, Steve Redman’s report on the game:
The under 9’s went into the game missing goalkeeper George, defender Lewis and forward Joseph due to ilness and injury but the team was determined to continue their good form. Kaya took over the goalkeeping gloves and Olly filled in at the back but no subs meant that there were going to be some tired kids afterwards.
Cray started brightly and were playing some really good football despite the conditions and were soon working the Petts Wood keeper from long range through efforts from captain Kieran. Kieran and Ben then worked an excellent one two down the right hand side before a shot from Kieran was blocked by a great tackle. Andy then poked a shot wide from an Olly corner. It was all Cray in the first half as Callum and Ben shot wide from tricky angles. Striker Connor then saw a shot blocked but it was an excellent first half from the under 9’s and Kaya only had the one save to make. The back two of Callum and Olly were brilliant in defence, protecting Kaya well. They were intercepting the Petts Wood attackers when required, covering for each other and were well on top in their individual battles. The half time whistle was blown and the Cray team went off to re-charge their batteries.
The 2nd half began and no change, Cray continued to press for the first goal. Callum shot wide following good work from Ben down the right and Olly headed over from a Kieran corner. Kaya was required at the other end to keep the game 0-0 and saved well. The deadlock was soon broken when Andy found space in the box, turned and shot which the keeper parried but Andy was on hand to find the back of the net, 1-0 Cray! Andy nearly doubled the lead shortly after but hit the cross bar with a fine effort. The defence stood firm and never really looked like conceding and just before the final whistle, Kieran turned smartly and half volleyed just wide. The ref then blew the whistle and Cray were celebrating their 6th win on the bounce.
The boys wanted to dedicate the win to Lewis Taylor who they hope will be back very soon.
