Selkent U11 Aqua Shield
Cray Wanderers Lions 3 AFC Chislehurst 1
The Cray Wanderers Lions produced a terrific display to defeat fancied AFC Chislehurst at a sunny Mottingham Recreation Ground.
Despite only have nine players available for selection Cray took the game to Chislehurst from the beginning and scored two excellent goals through Jamie Evertitt and Callum Redman to lead 2-0 at the break. Chislehurst pulled a goal back early in the second half but Cray stormed back and Redman scored his second to make it 3-1. The Wands also had a shot come back off the crossbar and had an effort cleared off the line towards the end.
Steve Owen’s team started the better and looked fresher and played some fine football. Cray came close to scoring when Kaya Mahmut was played in down the left and he was denied by a brave block from the keeper.
Cray took the lead after fifteen minutes with a tremendous goal after a throw in was only partly cleared the ball came to Jamie Everitt just outside the penalty area who lashed in a superb strike which flew into the top left corner of the net.
The Wands came close again not long after when Everitt volleyed over the bar. Then Cray had a bit of a let off as Chislehurst following a skirmish in the box the ball was worked down the right and the ball was laid across to the no 2 whose shot was excellently saved by George Poole.
Cray came close to making it when Jamie Cook was put through by Zuriel Elueme’s pass down the left but was denied by the keeper who was brave again to come and block.
It was soon 2-0 shortly before half time when Kieran Fowler down the left set up Callum Redman whose first attempt was blocked and following up drilled a shot low into the net.
Half Time: 2-0
The second half began better for the visitors and they pulled a goal back four minutes after the restart. A free kick out on the left was floated into the box and came off the crossbar and out to the no 9 who tapped in from two yards out.
Cray though regrouped and ended the game very strongly and went back on the attack. Cook who had a good game was put through down the left and strode on into the area but his cross-shot was pushed brilliantly behind by the Chislehurst keeper. Then Mahmut had a strike from distance but his effort was spilled by the keeper but the ball was cleared.
The Lions were very unlucky not to score when Redman down the right saw his effort blocked by the keeper. The ball came out to Everitt who cracked a shot against the top of the crossbar.
By this stage Cray were playing some great football and deservedly scored a third with eight minutes to go. Redman who was a real handful down the right once again used his pace to get to the by line and as the keeper came out to meet him, his shot from a very tight angle squeezed its way into the net.
The Wands continued to press and from a free kick Fowler saw a shot saved by the keeper. Then with the game in its final minute Cray were denied again when the ball was cleared out to Fowler who saw his on target effort cleared off the line by the Chislehurst no 7. There were some very fine performances throughout the team and on a very warm morning they showed they had great reserves of stamina.
In the end Cray won an excellent match and this was their second win of the Aqua Shield group.
Team: George Poole, Lewis Taylor, Zuriel Elueme, Andrew Dzontoh, Ben Cook, Kieran Fowler, Callum Redman, Jamie Everitt, Kaya Mahmut.
Also in their group are the Cray Acorn Wanderers and they too had a good victory as they defeated Hayden Youth 4-2 at Foots Cray Rugby Club.
Elsewhere in the Selkent League only the U13s were in league action and James Taylor’s side lost an exciting game 4-5 at second placed Eltham Town Lions.
In the Kent Youth League, the U18s were beaten 1-6 at home by second placed Dulwich Hamlet. Meanwhile, the U16s continued their good form with a 2-2 draw at K Sports. This made it three games unbeaten for Michael Bruno’s team all away from home.
Due to next Sunday being Easter Sunday there are no Youth teams fixtures arranged for that date and fixtures return on 23rd April.
