The Cray Wanderers U10s Lions are a new team to the Cray Wanderers Youth setup this season after the very successful U9s Shark team all headed off to pro clubs giving coach Owen Roberts a new team of players to work with.
They were seeking their first victory in the Selkent League B Division and they achieved it with a fine performance to beat a very good Phoenix Sports side 1-0 at Mottingham Playing Fields.
On a murky December morning Cray got off to flyer here with a goal after four minutes from Zoran Lucas and survived a missed Phoenix penalty and despite some good stops from both keepers there were no further goals.
Cray began the game well with the pace of Brian Dadson to the fore early on and helped set up the opening goal with a good run down the right, into the area and he squared the ball to Zoran Lucas who turned the ball into the net from close range.
Phoenix looked to come back and the no 10 hit a shot wide and then saw a free kick pushed out by Oskar Wargacki and the follow up shot deflected behind.
Phoenix were then awarded a penalty after the no 4 was tripped inside the area but the no 6 hit his spot kick wide of the left post. Then the no 4 saw a near post shot pushed behind by Wargacki.
There was a flurry of chances before half time with Kacper Lubon setting up Dadson for a shot which went across goal. Then a superb run forward by the pacey Dadson ended with a shot which just went past the left post.
Phoenix saw a couple of shots fielded by Wargacki but the last good chance of the half came to Cray when Ryan Antonio burst into the area ans his shot was saved.
The second half started with Phoenix on top with the no 10 again denied with a shot palmed out by Wargacki and from a free kick played into the area curled a shot wide.
Cray searched for a second goal and almost came when another good run from Dadson ended with a shot saved by the Phoenix keeper.
Then Dadson and Gabriel Nakiakpor combined to set up Jayden Chukukeke inside the area but the keeper did well to block the shot.
Phoenix searched for a leveller with the no 8 curling a shot wide and the no 9 saw a shot well held by Wargacki but Cray managed to hold on to grab a well earned victory which the players enjoyed.
