Selkent League – U10B West Division
Cray Wanderers U10s 4 Dulwich Village Orange U10s 3
This morning saw a first look this season at Phil Foster’s U10s team as they took on Dulwich Village at Mottingham Playing Fields.
The team hadn’t been playing badly but were without a win going into the game but seemed to be running away with the game leading 3-1 at half time and then went 4-1 up with Liam Foster scoring a hat-trick before Dulwich pulled two goals back and the young Wands side had to hang on at the end to hold on to the win.
Cray started at a quick pace and scored after just a couple of minutes when Foster was played through and calmly slotted the ball into the net.
Then Chris Kamara saw a shot well held by the keeper as did Enis Paloji and then from a corner the ball came to Harvey Richardson who shot just wide.
Cray were looking in control of the game and Gary Youchev played a fine ball through to Foster who once again showed composure to score in off the goalkeeper.
Dulwich started to come into the game a bit more and the no 6 saw a shot pushed behind for a corner by Conor Fowler.
Cray though went back on the attack and scored a fine third goal when Youchev burst through to score with a super finish.
Dulwich pulled a goal back before half time when from a move down the right the ball was played across and the striker scored from close range.
Before half time Foster was denied twice by good saves from the Dulwich keeper but Cray deserved a 3-1 half time lead.
Dulwich looked a different team after the break and Fowler did well to make a very good save pushing the ball round the post. As the corner came in the ball came back off the post.
Foster saw a shot saved for Cray before Dulwich twice forced good saves from Fowler.
Cray though against the run of play a bit went 4-1 up when Youchev played a great pass through to Foster who is an incredibly gifted forward who usually hits the target and did so emphatically for his hat-trick.
Ricardo Dyer then hit the post for Cray before the no 10 shot over for Dulwich. Then Youchev saw a shot saved from Ola Yusuf’s pass.
Dulwich made it 4-2 with around 12 minutes to go when the forward tucked home a fine finish from a lay off from the no 6.
Cray kept on going and from a corner, Richardson shot wide and Youchev was denied by a good save from the keeper’s foot.
Dulwich though were threatening going forward and pulled another goal back with five minutes to go when the no 6 scored following up a rebound and set up a nervy finish for Cray.
Cray were finding it a bit hard to see the game out and there were a couple of frantic clearances and a last chance for the visitors came with a volley just over the bar.
The Wands despite the nervy ending had deserved to win the game and despite initial reservations that the side might struggle today, I was very impressed with the team, the coaching of the side and in Liam Foster they have a potential star with quick feet and a good finisher.
Next week they travel to Orpington FC Colts but they have now got off the mark for the season and can go there optimistic their season can take off.
