Cray Wanderers 4
Barber 35 pen, 63, 96, Payne 92
Newbury-Treelock 30, Okorogueye 61
Cray Wanderers are through to the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Youth Cup after a dramatic extra-time victory over Holmesdale at Hayes Lane. Twice the Wands went behind in each half but fought back quickly each time with captain Joe Barber scoring a hat-trick while Ronnie Payne gave Cray the lead for the first time two minutes into extra-time.
On a fine if a little chilly evening the scene was set for a cracking local derby with a cup-tie edge. Mark Dacey’s Cray side started the game confidently and set off at a very quick pace. The Wands created the first real opening and were unlucky not to score when Ronnie Payne found Deshon Carty down the left and his ball into the box came to Adam Bambofree who saw his effort from four yards kept out by a fine save from Rashid Shefik.
Shortly after Cray came close again from a free kick 25 yards from goal with Joe Barber firing a shot inches over the crossbar.
Holmesdale were looking neat and tidy in possession and threatened down the left hand side with Ada Okorogueye cutting into the area and his near post shot was pushed out by Tiwa Fujamade.
Cray continued to look dangerous going forward and from a free kick 20 yards out Kwame Poku curled a shot wide. Holmesdale came close themselves to scoring when from a left wing corner the ball came to Ben Leeson who headed over the top.
It was the visitors who took the lead on the half hour when Diego Richardson perhaps for the first time in the evening was able to get away down the right and his ball into the box came to Josh Newbury-Treelock who found space and placed a well struck shot into the bottom right corner of the net.
Newbury-Treelock almost scored again when he just couldn’t get on the end of another fine ball across from the right.
That was a let off and Cray got back into the game on 35 minutes when they were awarded a penalty when Carty worked his way into the box and was upended by Leeson and the spot-kick was given. Barber showed a captain’s responsibility by coolly slotting the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 1-1.
Before half time Cray began to exert pressure and were unlucky not to go ahead when Carty made a great run into the area and laid the ball to Payne who cracked a shot against the crossbar from 12 yards.
Finally before the break Carty who was becoming more of an influence saw a shot go wide from 25 yards and the two sides went in even at the break.
HT – 1-1
The second half was frenetic and fast paced and at times a bit scrappy but always competitive and plenty of drama.
Early on in the second half Kwaku Gyabi Junior found Payne whose shot was deflected behind for a corner. Then for Holmesdale an excellent cross from Alex Taylor fizzed across goal and away from the onrushing Newbury-Treelock.
Then for Cray after the award of a free kick, Payne curled a ball round the wall and Shefik claimed the ball on his line at the second attempt.
The game went from end to end and Holmesdale showed they were dangerous on the break and Newbury-Treelock set up Taylor who hit a shot from outside the area and slightly off balance drove his shot wide of the right post.
In the 61st minute, Holmesdale regained the lead when Okorogueye took advantage of a misplaced pass and down the right of the area drove in a cross-shot which crept in the bottom left corner past Fujimade.
The lead this time last just two minutes when Cray won a corner down the right and Lee Lewis’s ball into the area was flicked on by Bambrofee and reacting quickest Barber stabbed the ball into the net through a crowd to make it 2-2.
The prospect of extra-time was looming large but Holmesdale almost went back in front for the third time when Newbury-Treelock chipped a shot which Fujamade had to push behind.
The match went through a bit of a lull for the first time until the closing minutes which also saw a few minutes added on for stoppages when Cray almost won the tie.
Firstly Poku flashed in a half volley which was well claimed by Shefik. Then Carty found Neil Spencer down the left who unlucky to see his fierce drive go narrowly past the right post.
Then in the dying moments the ball came to Spencer from Carty’s cross and he couldn’t quite get set for a shot and the ball came out to Toby Bayliss shot shot over the bar. Finally and with the last action of the 90 minutes from a free kick floated in Barber nodded over the bar.
FT – 2-2
Extra time began with Holmesdale looking extremely tired and Cray dominated the opening half of extra time. Firstly Poku found Carty who hit a low shot from 20 yards which Shefik got down to claim.
However in the 2nd minute of extra time Cray took the lead for the first time when Spencer played the ball down the right into Payne who crept into the area and powerfully drove the ball into the net giving Shefik no chance and it was 3-2 to Cray.
Four minutes later for the first time in the contest a team had a degree of comfort as Robbie Daye found Lewis and his ball to the near post was turned in by Baber to complete his hat-trick.
Payne saw an effort early in the second period pushed over the bar by Shefi but credit to Holmesdale who could have been forgiven for jacking the game in but kept plugging away and Nathan Daniels superb run forward from the back saw the ball come to Imran Kayani whose driven cross-shot was pushed out by Fujimade.
Then Jack Gallagher was denied by another brave block from Fujimade from close range and then from a free kick the ball came to Richardson who headed wide and finally for a great nights entertainment Leon Thomas shot over but Cray who were looking tired themselves by the end had done enough to win a titanic contest. The Wands will now travel to the winners of the Bridon Ropes vs VCD Athletic tie in the 1st Qualifying Round. Whatever the opponents if that game is as good as this one then the fans will be in for a treat.
