Glebe 1 (Obasa 11) Cray Wanderers 2 (Parker 30, Walker 58 pen) – PSF – 28/7/17
Cray Wanderers wet and soggy pre-season campaign continued on Friday evening as the Wands came from behind to beat Glebe 2-1 at Foxbury Avenue.
Certainly Cray were made to work hard for the victory against the SCEFL Premier new boys and went behind after 11 minutes following a swift breakaway. The Wands though rallied and levelled after half an hour with Freddie Parker’s fine header. The rain seemed to get worse in the second half and the game perhaps petered out after an excellent first half but Cray notched the winner in the 58th minute courtesy of Jerome Walker’s penalty after Karl Dent was upended in the area.
Cray started the game confidently and Lea Dawson had an early effort which was well held by the Glebe keeper on the left post.
It was Glebe though who struck first when they broke well down the left and the ball was played through to the lively Fred Obasa who ran on and from ten yards looked to lob Nick Blue who despite getting a hand to the ball couldn’t prevent the ball hitting the back of the net.
It took a little while for Cray to get back into the game despite having a large share of possession. Around the 25 minute they started to look more menacing and Jerome Walker down the left saw an effort palmed round the post by the keeper.
Then Dean Carpenter from the edge of the D hit a shot which the keeper parried but no one could follow up a rebound.
Cray though drew level after 30 minutes with a well worked goal with Freddie Parker latching on to a loose ball to switch the ball out to the right to Warren Whitely who put over a fine cross which Parker latched on to head home from 8 yards.
Shortly after from a corner, Parker planted a header on goal and then Dent saw a shot parried which before Glebe had a second wind and had a couple of shots going just over the bar. Then Obasa who had a very good half strode away down the right this time and fired in a shot which went narrowly past the left post.
The second half began in the rain and Glebe almost went in front straight away and the no 16 from close range poked the ball towards goal in the goalmouth and Blue showing good instincts blocked the ball away.
Karl Dent saw an effort knocked behind for a corner which led to the home side to frantically clear away before Cray earned a penalty when Michael Frieter who came on for the second half down the left played a ball through to Dent who was brought down inside the area. In the 58th minute Walker struck home the penalty fairly decisively.
Cray then had an element of control of the game for the remaining half hour. An effort from Luke Medley was saved by the keeper and then Frieter played the ball across from the left to Dawson who fired over the bar.
The game then went through a lull with Timi Osidobu and Michael Power shooting wide before Glebe were awarded a free kick right on the edge of the area but the no 4 shot well over.
Cray thought they had scored a third in the 88th minute when Medley’s cross from the right to the back post came to Power who tucked the ball home but was ruled fractionally offside.
The Wands for the first time in pre-season really had to grind out a victory and this now sets up Cray for two friendlies against Step 3 opposition, next Thursday at home to Dorking Wanderers and then next Saturday at Merstham. With it then being August perhaps we might even see the sun by then.
