Pre-Season Friendly – 6/8/16
Lowestoft Town 1 Cray Wanderers 0
Cray brought their pre-season campaign to a close with a narrow defeat at Ryman Premier Lowestoft Town.
A goal eleven minutes into the second half was enough to give the Trawler Boys the win but there was little to choose between the sides during the ninety minutes.
On a warm afternoon in Suffolk there was at times the feel of a last pre-season game ahead of the big kick off and the game started fairly slowly. Cray did have a half chance in the opening minute when Sid Njie was played through but was closed down and the ball came out to Ben Mundele down the left whose shot was deflected wide for a corner.
The best opening for Lowestoft early came to attacking full back, Barker who was foiled inside the area by a fine last ditch tackle by Lea Dawson. For Cray, Solomon Taiwo blasted a free kick high over the bar as chances were hard to come by.
The game came alive in the 27th minute with a very good chance for Lowestoft when Barker combined with Jake Reed to set up Glover who fired over the bar when well placed. Then Blake-Tracy played in Barker inside the area but shot wide under pressure from Grant Basey.
Cray were unlucky when Jay Leader’s run from the back set up Mundele down the left who cut in and curled a shot just over the bar. Then for Cray Walter Figueira’s run to the edge of the area and then found Mundele whose cross into the box couldn’t reach a team mate.
Before half time, Lowestoft started to take control and should have scored twice before the break. First, a free kick into the box found Henderson who with time turned a shot just wide of the left post. Then Deeks fired over after another fine cross from Barker.
Half Time 0-0
The second half started a bit quicker and Karl Dent and Taiwo both hit shots over. For Lowestoft a free kick twenty yards from goal by Spillane was deflected towards goal forcing Nick Blue to push the ball wide for a corner.
The deadlock was broken in the 56th minute when Ryan Jarvis had time to put a ball over the top which was flicked on by Reed to Deeks who rolled the ball into the net as Blue came out.
Cray then were mostly on the offensive as Lowestoft never really threatened too much to add to their lead. The Wands had a fair amount of possession but perhaps lacked a real cutting edge to go with their decent approach play.
Anthony Adesite made a lively appearance in the second half and his pace caused Lowestoft problems and he put over a fine cross from the right which was hacked wide for a corner. From the right wing corner, Basey’s floating cross to the far post was missed by the keeper but luckily for him curled wide of goal.
There was another lively second half appearance by Josh Jackson who twice came close to levelling the game. First with a decent strike from outside the area which the keeper had to save. Then in the dying moments of the game was set up on the right edge of the area but shot over the crossbar.
In the end Cray went down to defeat but there was so little to choose between the sides you feel if Cray had a few more of their regular players available they could have gone on to win.
Still after nine pre-season games with one defeat things have gone well and now the waiting is almost over and a week today, points will be up for grabs as the season starts against Sittingbourne at Hayes Lane.
