Cray Wanderers penultimate Pre-season friendly sees the relatively short trip to Phoenix Sports on Thursday 1st August. Kick off at the Mayplace Ground is 7.45pm.
Pre-season has gone well for Cray Wanderers up to this point and have won their last three games impressively at Whitstable Town, Grays Athletic and at AFC Sudbury 5-1 last Saturday. The good news for Cray Wanderers fans this week has been the confirmed signings of Andre Coker, Charlie Allen and Tom Murphy which frees them of the trialist tag which pre-season has given them to date.
The Sudbury performance was excellent after going a goal down and saw five different scorers with Joe Taylor, Aaron Rhule, Karl Dent, Freddie Parker and Tom Phipp finding the net. The team have looked sharp through pre-season and are almost ready to go. Just the two more matches to go with the visit to Phoenix Sports followed by a trip to Hayes & Yeading United on Saturday, 3rd August. Cray begin the Isthmian Premier season at Kingstonian on Saturday 10th August.
Phoenix Sports are always tough opponents and this will be no different on Thursday. Paul Bryon’s team are hard to beat and finished in a respectable 9th place in the Isthmian South-East last season. Their most recent pre-season games have seen a 3-2 win at Erith Town on 23rd July and a 0-2 defeat at home to Lordswood on Monday. They begin their Isthmian South-East season on 17th August in what looks like a fascinating clash at home to Ashford United.
There haven’t been too many league games between the sides with just 6 previous league matches. Cray have won 3, drawn 2 and lost 1 of the 6 games. Last season’s games saw a 1-1 draw at Hayes Lane on 8th December, 2018 with Joe Taylor’s debut goal cancelling out Alex Teniola’s strike for Phoenix Sports. The two sides met again at Phoenix on 2nd March where Karl Dent’s first half goal was enough to claim a hard earned three points.
Phoenix Sports gained promotion to the Isthmian League as champions of the Southern Counties East League in 2014-15 and in their first two seasons in the Isthmian North finished 14th and 8th before gaining a switch across divisions to the South division in 2017-18 adapting very well to their new surroundings finishing in a respectable 11th and the move to the new South-East Division last season ended in a 9th place finish.
