On the 11th hour of the 11th Day of the 11th month we remember those that lost their lives serving their country in war, conflict & peace-keeping missions around the world. Especially poignant this year, the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Lest we forget the sacrifices made for our freedom in such terrible conditions and from those servicemen and women from the Cray’s who fought in both World Wars and who served their country.
We remember those who may have played for Cray Wanderers prior to the War and also to those in the 17th and 23rd (Service) Middlesex Regiment or Football Battalion. At the start of the war football continued to take place and after criticism many footballers signed up to this battalion especially from Clapton (later Leyton) Orient and Heart of Midlothian who provided a full team of players to serve. Many lost their lives in the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
On such a poignant day, prior to kick off of the game against Hastings United there will be a 2 minute silence to remember all those fallen or stricken.
Lest we forget
