Cray Wanderers bring November to a close on Saturday as the Wands return to league action at Flamingo Park after a three week absence as Carshalton Athletic are the visitors. Kick off: 3 pm
Cray will be looking to bounce back from last Saturday where on a blustery and wet day were beaten 0-2 at Canvey Island despite a good performance that deserved better than the end result and took the game to the home side despite conditions and had chances through Nathan Jeche, Nyren Clunis, Josh Williams amongst others to score. The Canvey goals came from a disputed penalty and a sucker punch near the end but after four successive away league games Cray will be hoping for home comforts and have been unbeaten in the last three home league matches.
The Wands dropped back into the bottom four after the midweek fixtures into 19th place but over November performances have deserved to yield more points than from the wins vs Hashtag United and Potters Bar Town.
Carshalton Athletic have had a very solid season so far and come into the match in 8th place on 25 points after 17 games and just two points off the playoff places. The Robins are unbeaten in their last six league and cup games and on Tuesday night drew 1-1 at Hastings United with ex-Wand David Smith scoring from the spot to earn a point to make it five goals in eight games.
Away from home Carshalton Athletic have won at Chichester City (3-1), Hashtag United (1-0) and drawn at Folkestone Invicta (1-1), Bognor Regis Town (1-1) and Hastings United (1-1). Their only defeats came at Cray Valley PM (0-1), Canvey Island (0-1) and Wingate & Finchley (1-2). At home Carshalton have beaten Wingate & Finchley (3-2), Folkestone Invicta (2-1), Billericay Town (4-3) and Potters Bar Town (2-1). Carshalton drew with Lewes, Dover, Hendon and Cheshunt with just the one defeat at home to Dartford. Carshalton had an excellent run in the FA Cup like the Wands and reached the 4th Qualifying Round after beating Haywards Heath Town, South Park (Reigate) and Melksham before losing at Boreham Wood. In the FA Trophy Carshalton were beaten at Hadley in the 3rd Qualifying Round but have won in the Surrey Senior Cup and Isthmian League Cup after wins against Epsom & Ewell and AFC Croydon respectively. Tommy Bradford is the leading scorer so far with 6 goals.
Carshalton finished 12th last season with 61 points and Cray’s record against them has been very good with the Wands winning the last three home games and five out of the last six meetings. Last season Cray did the double over the Robins winning 1-0 at Hayes Lane in November 2023 courtesy of an own goal and won 2-1 at Colston Avenue in February 2024 with a brace of goals from Ellis Brown and Joseph Bell scoring for Carshalton Athletic. The teams have met many times during the Isthmian League years and is always a great match.
With a busy December ahead for Cray Wanderers including games against Dover, Billiericay Town, Dartford and Hendon Saturday promises to be a key match with both sides looking for the three points at both ends of the table.

THE PRE-MATCH THOUGHTS OF NEIL SMITH
Cray Wanderers after a three week absence return to league action at Flamingo Park after four successive away league games and looking to bounce back from last Saturday’s defeat at a blustery Canvey Island. Here Neil Smith looks back to the game and to this afternoon’s match with Carshalton Athletic.
Hello Neil. Let’s look back to last Saturday and the game at Canvey Island which ended in defeat in difficult conditions but you must have been pleased with the performance as the team gave it everything on the day and perhaps didn’t get the rub of the green!
Before the game I said to the team it is going to be hard to judge anyone today with these conditions. I thought though we played some good attacking football against the wind, got the ball down well and passed it around but we went one nil down after what we thought was a dubious penalty at the time and then you speak to officials afterwards and they say there wasn’t perhaps the contact they thought they saw. Then again we got a penalty and we didn’t dispatch ours so it was a game of two penalties.
I thought up until then I felt we played the conditions very well against and with the wind. People automatically think when you’ve got the wind behind you the game is easier but it isn’t as it actually takes the ball away from you and you’ve got to try to pass to feet. We did that but it was just the end product in both boxes which went against us last Saturday.
I felt we restricted them to few chances on Saturday but were caught by a bit of a sucker punch in the end.
That’s right, I thought Nyren had a good chance in the first half but unfortunately the ball hit the keeper and that was typical of the early chances. Also we had a few set plays where I thought we could have done better. We restricted Canvey to few chances but at the end as what happens when you try to pass to feet, you make a mistake and an under hit back pass to Shaun falls to their centre forward who goes round him and scores but overall we restricted them to few chances or any at all.
On to this afternoon’s game and the visit of Carshalton Athletic who I think are perhaps the best footballing side in the league but we have had a decent record against them in recent seasons especially at home.
We went and watched them last Monday and they are a good side. Obviously, David Smith was with us earlier in the season and is now at Carshalton and has been scoring but hopefully suffers a drought against us. Peter Adeniyi’s teams play a certain way which is high risk, high regard so can lose the ball in certain positions but he has stuck to his principles and they are a very good side. They have some excellent players and we know it is going to be a tough game and we seem to be playing teams at the moment who are coming into form.
Looking into December Neil we have some cracking, mouthwatering games coming up like Chichester, Dover, Billericay Town, Dartford, Hendon and Dulwich Hamlet.
That’s right, the run up to Christmas is going to be great and especially the home games and the visits to local clubs like Dover and Dartford so it will be very eventful but this division is eventful at the moment and some of the clubs in the league are unbelievable and some of the players in their teams and bringing in better players than the season before. It will be a tough time but we will be calling up all of the squad over Christmas and the supporters have been amazing with the move to the new stadium and if we can keep getting them behind us they can be our 12th man.
