Congratulations to the Cray Wanderers Women who finished off the season in style with a dramatic stoppage time winner from Maddie Bone to beat League Champions and Kent Plate Winners Maidstone United at the Gallagher Stadium.
Cray were looking for revenge for the 0-3 defeat to Maidstone United in the Kent FA Plate Final on 16th April and the game here got off to a remarkable first ten minutes with Maidstone coming close in the second minute when Chi Madamombe shot wide.
The Wands drew first blood in the 4th minute when Ellie Rivers headed home from a left wing corner.
Maidstone though showed their champions credentials levelling two minutes later when Madamombe was on hand to level from close range.
In the 10th minute Maidstone completed a quick turnaround when Neve Platt curled home a fine free kick strike.
Maidstone threatened a third but were reduced to ten players before half time when Jaz Etheridge was sent off for bringing down Mofi Adepoju. Chloe Francis and Millie Main came close before the break.
HT: 1-2
With the extra player advantage Cray had the better of the second half and Millie Main headed over before the Wands levelled just after the hour.
From a free kick Emily Symonds got on the end of a cross to make it 2-2 and set up.a nailbiting last half hour.
The Wands sought a winner and Rivers and Maddie Bone both drew saves from Cara Davies and Adrianna Zak also twice got on the scoresheet.
With the game in the first minute of added time Cray deservedly retook the lead from a corner with Maddie Bone meeting the ball to cue wild celebrations.
Main nearly added a fourth but Cray Wanderers held on to embellish only their third season as a senior Women’s team with trophy success.
Danny Stanton’s side have once again done the club proud and Maidstone were unbeaten last season so to thwart their treble bid is worthy of credit and cap off an amazing season.
