There was no denying it – Cray Wanderers Women needed a result, if not all three points, away at Tonbridge Angels today who came into today’s meeting of the top two five points clear but with Cray having a crucial game in hand.
Whereas the title could not be won and lost today, today’s game felt pivotal as to deciding its destination, and Tonbridge are in the driving seat having produced a convincing display today that saw them take the lead in the 12th minute when Charlotte Cresswell tucked home a shot from the edge of the box.
It was a lead they doubled five minutes later when Aimee Churchill found some room on the left hand side of the pitch and made the most of it to find the bottom left in a good finish.
Charlotte Cresswell then had a further chance for Tonbridge when her deflected effort was saved at the bottom right by Jess Cox, before Chloe Francis dragged a shot past the left post for Cray.
The 25th minute saw Tonbridge score once again – Hope Mumford with a first time finish into the top left corner.
Seven minutes later and it was 4-0 to the Angels when a move down the left saw the ball squared to Charlotte Cresswell who tucked into the bottom left.
However, in the same passage of play, Cray goalkeeper Jess Cox had to go off on a stretcher due to an injury to her ankle, meaning Chloe Francis was put in between the sticks and Millie Main on in Cox’s place.

That seemed to stem the tide until half time with Grace Laverick having a shot for Cray finish down the throat of Angels goalkeeper Lois Bartlett from the edge of the box.
HT: 4-0.

However Tonbridge did not let off after the break and, after she had a shot caught by Chloe Francis minutes before, Grace Mayhead made it 5-0 in the 56th minute when she found the bottom right corner at the near post.
Five became six in the 65th minute when Hope Mumford managed to score a similar goal to Grace Mayhead before her but to the opposite side and bottom left.
Cray however pulled a goal back a minute later – who else but Millie Main to tuck home one on one to take her tally at that point to nine for the season.
However, a minute later, Tonbridge restored a six goal margin when Charlotte Cresswell found the net via the inside of the bottom right corner.
Five minutes later and Cray had another goal back – Millie Main reaching double figures for the season with a brilliant finish from a corner into the top left.
Tonbridge Angels had a penalty saved late on when Ellie Rivers gave away a penalty for handball which Grace Mayhead struck down the middle and straight at Chloe Francis.
There was still time in the game for a Cray consolation with Grace Laverick scoring on debut when her free kick went through the grasp of Lois Bartlett and in.
Overall though a tough day at the office for Cray who slip down to third in the table, with Tonbridge opening up an eight point gap to the Wands and six to Kings Hill.
FT: 7-3.
GET WELL SOON JESS COX

The Cray Wanderers Women’s goalkeeper had to be stretchered off today and it is confirmed she has broken her ankle.
All at Cray Wanderers wish Jess a speedy recovery and our thoughts are with her at this time.
