After dropping a couple of points away at Margate last weekend, Cray Wanderers Women could ill afford to drop many more in such a short league season as they put their unbeaten league record on the line this afternoon against Tunbridge Wells Foresters Women, themselves joint top of the league with a 100% record.
Cray certainly started brightly with Millie Main striking down the throat of Foresters’ goalkeeper Helena Fothergill from the edge of the box before the hosts took the lead in the ninth minute when Sarah White was slipped the ball and superbly lobbed Fothergill from 25 yards.
A fast start continued for Cray in the sixteenth minute when they doubled their lead – Sarah White playing through Chloe Obando to find the bottom left one on one.
However, a minute later, Foresters had a goal back – Kelly Moran having the ball knocked back to her before stroking the ball into the bottom right corner.
Both sides then were perhaps guilty of cancelling each other out before Cray made it 3-1 in the 35th minute when a low ball from the left by Chloe Obando saw Sarah White slide in to score her second.
Again however back came Foresters when a corner from the right saw Kelly Moran brilliantly volley the ball into the top left corner four minutes before half time.
HT: 3-2.
With the game in the balance at this point, Cray went through the gears at the start of the second half and hit Foresters with a goal blitz! The first of these took place in the 50th minute when Maddie Bone’s initial effort hit the crossbar but Chloe Obando was on hand to tuck home the rebound.
Three minutes later and it was 5-2 to Cray when Maddie Bone’s shot was saved into the path of Ellie Rivers to find the bottom left.
Another four minutes passed before Cray scored a sixth when Millie Main continued her fine scoring form this season by finding the bottom left following a nice team move.
Foresters would not lie down however and pulled a goal back in the 65th minute when a move down the right drew out Cray goalkeeper Jess Cox and left Clara von Wedel Tuckley with a tap in.
Both teams then had chances before Cray made it 7-3 in the 84th minute when, on her debut for the club, Hannah Humphreys got played through on goal, rounded Foresters goalkeeper Helena Fothergill, and put the ball into the unguarded net.
Foresters maybe should have got themselves a consolation two minutes from time when Kelly Moran came very close to a hat trick but her strike hit the right post rather than the back of the Cray net.
Cray added the icing on the cake with the last kick of the game and what a story – in her first appearance since giving birth, Katie Jackson bent a shot into the top right corner.
Cray’s impressive start to the league therefore continues, as does their unbeaten run in the league, and they will be looking to maintain the momentum next week away at Hollands & Blair.
FT: 8-3.
