(Note – Sevenoaks Town’s management did not provide us with any names today so we only have numbers to go off. We apologise for this).

Last season Cray were on the end of a couple of defeats to Sevenoaks Town (4-1 at home and 2-1 away) which proved crucial for the eventual destination of the title to Greatness Park…

Today however Cray came into the meeting with momentum in attack but would it bear fruit?!

Indeed after scoring six against Chatham Town Development, seven against Horsham and eight last week against Parkwood Rangers, Cray Wanderers Women took to the field today for arguably their toughest test of pre season so far against last season’s league champions Sevenoaks Town, now promoted to the league above…

And it certainly proved tough at the start for the Wands Women with Sevenoaks’ number 4 playing a neat one-two before firing past the left post and their number 12 having a trickle to the bottom left comfortably saved by Cray goalkeeper Jess Cox.

Cray grew into the first half as it went along and, after Emily Symonds had a ball over the top headed at Sevenoaks’ goalkeeper by Lucy Rix, the hosts took the lead in the 27th minute when a low ball from the right saw Millie Main poke home six yards out.

Sevenoaks then dominated the chances column with their 5 and then 9 having efforts straight at Jess Cox, their number 16 having an effort wide of the left post after a nice move, and their number 10 running through on goal only to be denied by a wonderful save by Jess Cox in tipping the ball over the bar.

Sevenoaks’ equaliser had been coming however so it was no surprise to see them score in the 44th minute when a corner ricocheted around the box and saw Emily Symonds get the unfortunate last touch as the ball ended up in Cray’s net for an own goal.

HT: 1-1.

Sevenoaks kept their momentum into the second half and took the lead in the 58th minute when their number 16 took aim from the edge of the box and lashed home past Jess Cox.

However, in a crazy minute, Cray went up the other end and equalised – Lucy Rix finding the bottom right corner once in on goal.

That seemed to flick a switch for Cray who took the lead just five minutes later when Millie Main found herself in and pinged the ball into the top right corner for her second of the game.

And, another five minutes later, Cray had breathing room when a low ball from the right saw Chloe Ashdown come up with a nonchalant finish in flicking the ball over the Sevenoaks’ keeper’s head from the left side of the box.

After seeing off some Sevenoaks half chances, Cray could have added to their lead late on when Chloe Ashdown drove through on goal but was denied one on one.

Overall an impressive win for the Wands against higher league opponents and a good marker for where they are at, if not a statement.

FT: 4-2.
